"Great long trip hiking boot." 2009-05-20

This review is for those who need a wider, medium duty hiking boot. I wear 9 4E in sneakers. At 9 2E, and with thick socks these Danner Mountain Light II boots are very comfortable. My experience with Goodyear welt and Vibram soled leather boots includes super stiff Vasque and Alico Summits. I am (or was) a heavy pack hiker needing excellent support only stiff boots like this can provide. The Vasques and Alicos are wonderful for heavy pack hiking in mountainous terrain. But in my old age, these Danner Mountain Lights are better since I can no longer carry a pack. The Danners are lighter. They are more flexible and they are not padded or insulated. The GoreTex lining is effective. During several hikes, my feet stayed reasonably cool. Leather quality is excellent. They come supplied with some odd but very comfortable hard plastic orthotics. I did not think these would work but they are great.

As to stiffness, these boots cannot compare to the Vasques or Alicos. But for general use they are much better than the sneaker based rubber soled, so called "hiking boots" that most manufactures have switched to. Now, I know there are those who think that light duty hiking boots are acceptable for long hard hikes. I can tell you, at age 59 I out hiked a bunch of younger folks wearing sneaker boots. Their feet were so sore they could barely walk. If you are planning any kind of serious hiking, especially with a pack, you need stiff soled boots. The Danners are not that kind of boot. But they will walk the guts out of any sneaker boot. If you do buy those super stiff boots, wear them around for at least a month so your feet can acclimate to them. The Danners won't need much break in. They are great for regular no-pack hiking. Two additional pluses: these are USA made. Also, resolable. Nice.

I have two complaints. The boot tops need a little padding. I got used to them fairly soon so no big deal. Also, the tongue gusset stops at shoe top height. This is why I gave these four instead of five stars. Serious hiking in the rough demands a full height gusset. Otherwise, the boots fill up with dirt. This does make them easier to put on and take off, so there is some benefit.

Unfortunately, 2E wide boots like this are getting harder to find. I will definately buy these again after I wear this pair out in 15-20 years. %-))

Update after trip to Glacier National Park:

After hiking approx. 25 miles through very rocky terrain, I am very impressed with these boots. Good light weight hiking boots. This was over sharp rocky trails and rock hopping.

"Gets better with age" 2009-07-03

I was unsure about purchasing this boot; I had read a lot of good things about it, but usually buy Asolos because they fit my feet well. At the time I purchased the boot, for whatever reason, everyone was out of stock in quality backpacking/hiking boots, so I purchased it.

I haven't been disappointed. This boot ages extremely well, and wears in much more than other boots over time. There's excellent ankle support, and the uppers are amazingly resilient. The soles wear well also--I can't complain. I've taken these boots to Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, Minnesota, and other places, in all sorts of extreme weather and they've worn remarkably well.

My only complaint is that the boots aren't the best for individuals with high arches. This is relatively minor, though, as the boots aren't bad, and I suspect that you could ameliorate the issue by purchasing a good insert, which are all over the place now. I haven't gotten around to doing so but probably should.

Compared to what you can get out there, this boot is great. Vasque is now all done, being made in China. However, the tongue is now made of artificial material and the collar around the ankle top is less dense.

That being said, these are still quite a boot. The stiff sole grips like a suction cup and the leather is rugged- yet softens up with use. If I had not had an older pair to compare, I would have given them 5 stars.

"Good, needs improvement" 2009-07-31

Very comfortable boot. I wear these as daily shoes and they are great, except for the eyelets. They seem to have a plastic backing that falls off and the top metal piece comes loose from the boot. Now I have these little bangles loose on my shoe laces. I have owned several pairs of Danners, this is the first time this has happened to me. I am not sure if these are made in USA or not. The eyelets are not a huge deal for an otherwise nice boot. It just irritates me each time I lace them up. Otherwise, I have been quite happy with them and how well they breath. It's just those %$#@ eyelets!

These have to be the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever owned. I find they fit great w/ my insteps. The only downside would they don't have the open hooks for quicker lacing. I use 550 parachute cord w/ them so it's not that big of a deal.

I love these boots because they are very comfortable. After 10 hours on the beat my feet still feel good. After several pairs of boots nothing beats Danner!!! If I had to pick smoething negative to say I would say the factory didn't put long enough shoes laces in them.

I'm hesitant to order shoes or boots online because of the critical factor of getting the right size. I ordered a half size larger as suggested and they fit just fine. They required very little break in. They aren't too heavy or bulky. I wore them recently all day long while fishing on a small boat and they were very comfortable. The inside of the boots in the ankle area left brown stains on my white socks which don't wash out easily so be aware of that.

I have a wide foot and there was just about no break in time - they were very comfortable the first time I put them on. They are not heavy - just right. I just got back from Afghanistan. I wore these boots everyday for a year. Wore them out as a matter of fact. That's why I'm here buying another pair exactly like my last ones. The Danner 26016 is far and away the best military boot I've ever owned. They are fantastic under heavy loads, and I don't find the lacing to be an issue. I'll not own another kind, given the choice. Extreme hot, extreme cold. 100% satisfied, and I'm coming back for more.

the shoes are quality and comfortable, but to lace them and get them on your feet, you need to schedule 5 minutes extra to put them on and another 5 to take them off. These boots do not have the open eye at the top for quick lace. you need to string each hole every time. because of the height of the boots, this can take a long time. I will return the boots and keep looking.

I work in the construction feild as a superintendent. I spend half my day in the office and half my day on site. I bought this boot 4 months ago and had high hopes since I have had good luck with Danners before. But this boot is not worth the money. I wore out the sole in 4 months and then had to go buy new boots. I have owned a pair of Georgia slip ons before the that lasted a year and a half and they were 50$ cheaper. Go for the Georgia.

Wore these boots everyday for a year in Iraq and they are still going strong. The treads are a little worn but that's to be expected. They're extremely comfortable and lightweight. They're almost like wearing a pair of sneakers, only a heck of a lot more durable. Once you wear a pair of these you'll never wear another pair of standard issue boots again. Sure they are a little pricey but your feet will thank you. I would suggest buying these somewhere that you can try them on first because they run a little big in size. I normally wear a size 12, but had to get these in an 11.5. Currently these are the best boots i've ever worn, but i would love to try the Oakley boots just to compare.
